Islamic wood carving

Wooden panels, dating to the Islamic period are often deeply carved. They are sometimes carved to different depths in order to obtain a pleasing chiaroscuro effect, a technique mastered especially by Fatimid woodworkers. UC 40775 was produced on Sicily and adorned a Fatimid palace in Cairo.
