Sinai: Serabit el Khadim (Serabit el-Chadim)

The Sinai peninsula between Egypt and Western Asia is one of the main copper mining regions for ancient Egypt. The most important site is Serabit el Khadim, where copper and malachite was found. There was a temple for Hathor ('Hathor mistress of turquoise') built in the Middle Kingdom (about 2025-1700 BC) and still important in the New Kingdom (about 1550-1069 BC). Finds include private and royal stelae and many votive offerings, mostly from the New Kingdom.
