The development of the cemeteries
in the Matmar-Badari-Qau region, from Badarian to the Late Period

The chart follows mainly O'Connor 1972: especially fig. 4.2 - 4.4. The appearance and disappearance of the cemeteries may broadly reflect changes in settlement pattern. Note though the fundamental problem of partiality in the archaeological record. The New Kingdom (about 1550-1069 BC) cemeteries could not be excavated since they are under modern settlements, while the Middle Kingdom (about 2025-1700 BC) is represented only by the great tombs of governors at Qau and just a few other burials which might be contemporary. For these two periods at least there are clearly serious gaps in the archaeological record.
