Shaping of Pottery:

"It is customary in describing pottery to differentiate between pots made by hand and those thrown on the wheel. It is necessary, however to realise that few pots are made by potter's hand alone, without the help of any other tool ... The wheel, furthermore, is a construction of almost infinite variety, ranging from simple, round or square table pivoting on an axis to a complex machine..." (Arnold/Bourriau 1993: 15)
