Some types of tombs in Prehistoric and Old Kingdom
(about 2686-2181 BC) Egypt

surface burial: a shallow hole in the ground
shaft burial: a deeper hole, or shaft
a shaft with one or more chambers
staircase tomb: a staircase leads to the burial chamber
mastaba: the building on top of many shafts (mastaba is an Arabic word for bench)
even small tombs could have had mastabas
