Heart scarabs are attested from the mid Thirteenth Dynasty on. They are common in elite burials of the New Kingdom (about 1550-1069 BC ) and later, and were often worn from a necklace around the neck. They did not replace the heart in the mummy as is sometimes claimed. The flat underside was usually inscribed with 'Book of the Dead' chapter 30.
