Abydos in the Old Kingdom (about 2686-2181 BC)
Between the Early Dynastic Period and the late Old Kingdom, little is known of the site. There are substantial chapels and tombs dated by their inscriptions to the later Old Kingdom, notably the tomb of Weni, governor of Upper Egypt in the Sixth Dynasty, famous for the vivid autobiographical hieroglyphic inscription, now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo: the tomb was found in the mid-19th century, and has recently been relocated on the central southern hill of the town cemeteries.
