The Impact of 3D VR Reconstructions: Saqqara

Question - do 3D models create a bias towards built environment against natural environment?

A VRML model of the landscape of Saqqara (8.1MB)

A selection of JPEG still images of Saqqara

Background information on Saqqara

Comments on the model: In contrast to the dynamic landscape, we could not reconstruct the temples with sufficient details. This is due to the limited amount of information that remains for this site. Nevertheless, the two gigantic temples must have overwhelmed the visitors by their sheer size in the heyday.

Evidence: The temples of Bubastieion and Anubieion at Saqqara were standing on terraces, but only a few foundation walls have survived. Therefore the alignment and original appearance of the monuments remain uncertain. The reconstructions are highly hypothetical.

Does the Saqqara question emerge from the pages?

Does the reconstruction help you learn about the site, or impose itself as reality?
