The Impact of 3D VR Reconstructions: Naqada

Question - early Egyptian urbanism: is Egypt 3300 BC already an urban civilization?

A VRML model of the Naqada model of the southern town, staircase pyramid and the temple (1.2MB)
(*All three structures are from very different periods and are placed together to show their relative positions only.)

An AVI model(2.9MB) and an MPEG model(1.1MB) showing the chronical transition of the central location in Naqada

A selection of JPEG still images of the Naqada Temple and the Southern Town

Background information on the southtown of Naqada

Comments on the model: In contrast to the temple of Seth, we had little information on the predynastic residence as well as the town attached to it and thus reconstructed them in a plain, block-type model. The approach to the town must have been very steep on foot.

Evidence: Petrie published a plan of architectural structures found at Naqada, which seem to be quite monumental. There is some discussion as to how to understand these remains. On Digital Egypt they are reconstructed as three palace-like residential structures with a huge town around it. The heavy walled structures could also have been a walled residential area with several buildings inside (some kind of acropolis or fortress). The other structures may be just the scant remains of the town.

Does the Naqada question emerge from the pages?

Does the reconstruction help you learn about the site, or impose itself as reality?
